Total solar eclipses in Ancient Egypt – a new interpretation of some New Kingdom texts

Despite the fact that the sun played such a prominent part in the religion and culture of Ancient Egypt it is surprising that there is virtually no mention of solar eclipses, which would not have been understood and so would have been terrifying. This paper discusses a class of inscriptions appearing on a number of artefacts from Deir el-Medina or nearby and also material from the Book of the D...

Rendering lunar eclipses

Johannes Kepler first attributed the visibility of lunar eclipses to refraction in the Earth’s atmosphere in his Astronomiae Pars Optica in 1604. We describe a method for rendering images of lunar eclipses including color contributions due to refraction, dispersion, and scattering in the Earth’s atmosphere. We present an efficient model of refraction and scattering in the atmosphere, including ...

A review of past eclipses

EE Cep is an eclipsing binary with a period of 5.6 years. The next eclipse will occur soon, in May–June 2003, and all available past eclipses were collected and briefly analysed. EE Cep shows very large changes of the shape and the depth of minima during different eclipses, however it is possible to single out some persistent features. The analysis suggests that the eclipsing body should be a l...

Timing Records of Ancient Lunar Eclipses in China and Long-term Variation of the Earth's Spin Speed

The Chinese ancient accounts of timing observations of 48 lunar eclipses and the secular variation of the Earth's spin speed are discussed. A series of T expressing the secular deceleration of the Earth's rotation was obtained. The average increase rate of length of the day is about 1.5 milliseconds per century.

Eclipse in Occlusion A perspectival mereotopological representation of celestial eclipses

This paper presents a formalisation and exploration of the concept of eclipse from the perspective of qualitative spatial reasoning. Building upon theories of spatial connectivity, occlusion and shadows, we show that eclipses can be described and reasoned about using mereotopological relations, and that these formalisms can be used to disprove some commonsense misconceptions about the nature of...
